Psalm 42:1-11

      如鹿切慕溪水。

2 我的心渴想 神,就是永生 神;
      我幾時得朝見 神呢?

      為何在我裏面煩躁?
      應當仰望 神,因祂笑臉幫助我;
      我還要稱讚祂。

      深淵就與深淵響應;
      祢的波浪洪濤漫過我身。

8 白晝,耶和華必向我施慈愛;
      黑夜,我要歌頌禱告賜我生命的 神。

To the Chief Musician. A Contemplation of the sons of Korah.

1 As the deer pants for the water brooks,
      So pants my soul for You, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
      When shall I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my food day and night,
      While they continually say to me,
      “Where is your God?”

4 When I remember these things,
      I pour out my soul within me.
      For I used to go with the multitude;
      I went with them to the house of God,
      With the voice of joy and praise,
      With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.

5 Why are you cast down, O my soul?
      And why are you disquieted within me?
      Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
      For the help of His countenance.

6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me;
      Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan,
      And from the heights of Hermon,
      From the Hill Mizar.

7 Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
      All Your waves and billows have gone over me.

8 The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
      And in the night His song shall be with me—
      A prayer to the God of my life.

9 I will say to God my Rock,
      “Why have You forgotten me?
      Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”

10 As with a breaking of my bones,
      My enemies reproach me,
      While they say to me all day long,
      “Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul?
      And why are you disquieted within me?
      Hope in God;
      For I shall yet praise Him,
      The help of my countenance and my God.

As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.

Everyone has his time of spiritual downcast, even the very spiritual man cannot be exempted - after a sweeping victory on Mount Carmel, the great prophet Ilijah slipped into spiritual trough begging for death under a broom tree. Nowadays, more and more people fall into depression too. In this psalm, the psalmist became downcast and disturbed for not seeing God, but he knew to put his hope in God and praise God, knowing that this is the only way to walk out of depression and spiritual trough. When we are tired and do not want to attend church, when we are lonely without anybody to talk to, when we fail repeatedly thereby being accused by the Devil, when we return from the presence of God in a retreat to everyday life, we should remember to put our hope in God and praise Him like the psalmist. Even though we may not know where's God, He never stops commanding His lovingkindness to us, giving us life and the help of His countenance. As our hearts continue to pant for God, and our mouths continue to praise Him, the help of His countenance becomes the help of our countenance, and the source of our joy.
